The Importance of Accountability in Novels

A lot of times you will see a character who is there as an observer and other people have the agency. They sometimes react, they'll say, well, I want my character to make character be interesting, so they'll make them quirky, but lacking all responsibility and accountability. Harry Potter is a wonderful example of this. Honestly, so is Sergeant Schlock. He is a weird looking alien, but in terms of accountability, that's true. That's true, he is not very much there,. But yeah, one way to make this work better is to give the main character more state than what's happening.
