Jefferson and Hamilton can barely bear to be in the same room together. They have very different policy prescriptions for what they want the new government to do. The Federalists tended to see the Republicans as basically un-reconstructed anti-Federalists. Neither side could recognize the legitimacy of the other, making compromise a pipe dream.
