If you bunker down after a nuclear weapon explode, someone near by you, then, after a couple of weeks, the fall out has mostly cleared,. and it's reasonably safet to go outside. Probably wouln't want to be breathing in lots of dust outside, but it's kind of survivable, again, in its scale the distance.
