The word aristocracy in ancient Greek didn't mean what it does today, namely an elite stratum of society endowed with inherited wealth. Aristochratia in ancient Greece was a regime type. The word originally just meant rule by the best. And that's what Plato's ideal Republic is all about. As we discussed in earlier episodes, this aristocracy in the ancient sense called Calipolis is the perfect city because it displays four cardinal virtues.
