The Lavender Scare

The Lavender Scare was a purge of gay and lesbian people ordered at the highest levels of the US government. The program spurred by a panic that destroyed careers and lives lasted for over 40 years. Today it's known as the Lavender Scare. It happened at the same time as the Red Scare when thousands of Americans were accused of having ties with communism and the Soviet Union. Publicly demonizing gay and Lesbian people was a way to win votes to take power.
