The Importance of a Closed Book in Jewish Life

How and why did the biblical text become such a significant part of Jewish life? Early rabbis were so ambivalent about it. I think one of the reasons was that they centered communal life on what was, for all intents and purposes, a closed book. By closing the book, rabbinic practitioners could imagine the Torah to be anything they wanted it to be.
