Altmetrics: A Way to Quantify Impact

I think altmetrics is a way to sort of quantify that this is making an impact. It's not just me putting stuff up on a free website, but who cares? Can you guys share what they mean by altmetrics? So the concept of alternative metrics are that you can look at impact and reach beyond traditional ones.
