In the original crimes of committed during the 70s and 80s where gene technology just didn't really exist, material was collected. It then later was subject to genotyping, which allows you to basically, if you have another sample from that person match, so you can tell with high probability who it is. Now, they actually ended up catching him because they had it. They found a match in an ancestral DNA database from someone who was his distant relative. And I think that that's just amazing that that was possible that decades after the fact that you can use genetic material to define someone.
