Episode #084 ... William James on Truth
Philosophize This!
The Squirrel Isn't Your Show Pony
The meaning of a concept is the sensory effect of its object. It doesn't matter if you believe that an invisible lepricon is keeping that diamond hard, nothing changes about the way a human norients themselves to it. William james has a really famous example that i think illustrates this concept a bit better. I he says, pretend you're walking through the woods, and you come across a beautiful little squirrel clinging to the side of the tree. The squirrel decides it's going to use its psychic powers to just always know where you are,. And it's always going to stay on the opposite side of that tree, so that you can never see it.
