The song is celebrating the idyllic, almost Eden-like beauty of the Great Plains. It's gone through many versions and different elements have been added in and taken out as it traveled through folk oral networks. In Roy Rogers version, there is a verse that says "the Red Man was pressed from this part of the West" The whole song has a wistful tone with mournful imagery of campfires going out.
