The troubles began when northern irish progressives began organizing to prussur the government for equal civil rights for catholics in the late 19 sixties. Mainstream unionist thought was split on this issue, with some of the more liberal side being willing to gradually accommodate certain demands. Other hard line ulster loyalists see this is a slippery slope to minority rule in northern ireland and eventually re unification with the republic. At least 80 people have been treated in hospital since police broke up last saturday's band civil rights march.
