The Problem With Organ Discards
Organ procurement organizations are under a tremendous amount of pressure to place the kidneys not to have discards. They will often decide or just based on experience know that certain programs are more willing to take kidneys and so it's easier to place those kidneys at certain programs. So they may preferentially send those programs to program X even though a patient at program Y had, if that had not been the case, maybe program Y would have gotten that kidney. The problem is for the patient that it doesn't serve that the patient best.
