Christians are confronted with the alleged brutality of what they take to be a universal truth. Some Europeans responded by doubling down and insisting that Christ wasn't their God, He was just God. For many others, that kind of question begging just wasn't going to cut it. They needed a response that was more immune to claims of cultural relativity than their parochial Christianity had proven to be.
