Definitions Are Meant to Facilitate Progress, Right?

A useful definition of machine doesn't have anything to do with what you're made of or whether you were designed or evolved. A machine is a system that works according to understandable logical rules and can be manipulated for specific outcomes. There's no such thing as, I don't think, yes, this is a machine, that is not a machine. It's always how much and what kind?
