Marius's Reforms Changed the Course of Roman History

Mariuss new army arrives in gaul to find that the cimbri and the teutones had for some reason directed their raiding operations towards spain instead of italy. Marius also saw that part of the romans problem was that they were fighting these northern barbarians with out dated military formations. So marius divides up the army into legions of around four thousand men, and divides up the legions into ten cohorts of 400 each. And he declares that their leaders, who are called centurions, are to become professional soldiers. He only wants the best men in these spots, lifers, and they were going to be rewarded handsomely.
