The Art and Science of Weaning
Just under 6,000 patients who were ventilated for at least two days were followed. Of these 4,500 entered the weaning process 65 had a short wean of less than 24 hours. 10% took less than a week with another 10 taking between 7 and 90 days. The remainder were considered to have failed to wean. This meant the patients succumbed to their illness and died in the ICU or they remained ventilated in hospital past 90 days. Some patients transferred to long-term specialist weaning facilities found in countries such as the USA.
