The Gicchi Community of Hogg Hammock, Georgia
Maurice Bailey is a farmer and activist in the Hogg Hammock community of Sappalo Island, Georgia. There were hundreds of formerly enslaved people on the island after the Civil War. They created as many as 15 communities but when tobacco tycoon RJ Reynolds sold his portion to the state of Georgia, he moved them all into one location. Today, there are only 30 Gicchi descendants left who plan to sustain their heritage by farming ancestral crops like red peas, sugar cane and indigo.
