The brothers opened an office in New York City, the very seat of the commodities trading business in the US. Abraham Lincoln pretty explicitly ban southern cotton from being sold to the north but not for these brothers. They simply acquired their cotton in the southern US, shipped it to England and then shipped it back to New York. The next generation starts working in the family business and they become an investment bank.
