The Problem With Listening to Language
Researchers took a bunch of corpora, they're called, which is fancy speak for collections of conversations. And what they found was when they measured the length of the delay, the of the silence, after an um or a it was all consistently longer than before. So it seems to indicate something about how much trouble you're having retrieving the information that you're trying to say.
