Foraging on Unimproved Land

African-American slaves subsisted in part by foraging on unoccupied lands, a practice that would later come under systemic attack after the Civil War. Early American property laws allowed foragers to forge on those unimproved lands but this right didn't extend to what you might call improved lands such as croplands and vineyards. The practice slowly waned as Americans moved away from the countryside and into cities and suburbs.
