Federalists up in new york, specifically john j and rufus king, took it upon themselves to publish the cor pondence. The result was a swift back lash against the french ambassador. Jenet had made the mistake of both believing his own hype and the anti washington invective streaming off the partisan jeffersonian presses. An overwhelming majority of americans still thought of george washington as nothing less than a minor deity. But when it came out how flagrantly disrespectful he was being, it turned out that he was not.
