The Pythagorean Theorem Was Understood in the Chaldean Period

Pythagoras is believed to have visited Babylon during his educational tour of the Near East. Other tablets that were recovered from a site that was once the ancient scribal school of Babylon demonstrate that the ancient Babylonians also understood square roots, cube roots, and even the concept of pie. While we have clear archaeological evidence that the Pythagorean theorem was understood in the old Babylonian period, we have no evidence that it was still understood in the 500s BC. It's highly likely that much of that mathematical knowledge was lost in that intervening time.
