The total effect of anything, is a combined product of what you're doing and what you think about it. A study with ellen langer found that people who were getting exercise but weren't aware of it had benefits to their health. They lost weight, they decreased their systolic blood pressure by about ten points on average, and they started feeling better about themselves, their bodies and and their work. Not surprisingly, that's amazing.
