Dr. Fellner: Both DKA and HHS are systemic conditions that not only affect the blood sugar, but it affects excuse me, the intravascular volume as well as the GFR and the kidney filtration. We ask clinicians when we get these patients in the ICU, are there any specific labs which are important for us to send in these patients before the endocrine team consults on them? I think those are probably the three most important laboratory values for endocrinologists because we know that giving individuals a tremendous amount of intravenous insulin will drive potassium intracellularly.
