This chapter discusses the progress and challenges in Indigenous suicide prevention efforts in Australia. It emphasizes the need for a targeted plan for Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander people and the importance of engaging with Indigenous stakeholders, lived experience groups, and marginalized communities. The chapter also highlights key factors in suicide prevention, the progress made in raising awareness, and the passion of advocates dedicated to promoting suicide prevention and supporting communities.
The rate of suicide in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is double that of non-Indigenous people in Australia, and it’s reached a crisis point – particularly amongst the young.
