House Appropriations Chairman George Mahone would have objected at the time had he known the details. Removing weight from naval aircraft is easier than adding weight to handle the stress of catapult launches and arrested landings. As was discovered by the F-111B, Admiral William Halzer said that for carrier operations, you have to add several thousands of pounds of structural weight so it becomes heavier.
