In 1984, there were 12,000 reported felonies committed on the New York subway system. That would included 5,000 robberies, 750 assaults, seven murders. But when you consider how many people rode the subway every day and you do the math, it turns out that an individual rider's chance of being attacked or robbed on any given subway ride was actually tiny.
