There are a few strips where Garfield talks to the camera sort of, and I can't remember the first one that happens. It is definitely a thing that occurs multiple times where it's just a Garfield strip. Normal appears for the first time as a cute little kitten that Garfield hates because it's cute and little. And he's like looking directly at the reader the whole time. This is the lasagna strip. For instance, I'm crazy about nature's most perfect food lasagna.
