The Role of Attention in Reading
Children are bombarded by information, which has several effects. When your attention is being bombarded, you don't give as much time to the consolidation of things that will become background knowledge. That's one thing perhaps even more important in terms of what I'm worried about with deep reading. If you have less and less background knowledge because you haven't consolidated what you've been attending to and putting it in memory, you won't know what you don't know.
