The first world war is passing beyond living memory. It's becoming a matter for the historians over time, as landscapes of the front lines are shaped and re shaped. History is recorded in stone. Whenever we want to learn about a past culture, it's inevitably the stone carving that gives us the clues. Stone lasts, and so it gives people a sense of if not immortality, then a sense of the memorial lasting for a very long time.
