The Politics of Fear-Mongering
I think it's hard to accuse the mainstream news organizations of fear-mongering when the stakes are so high. This is a very serious pandemic virus. I don't see the current criticism as particularly valid right now. And in fact, if you look in history, the influenza of 1918, the historians who have looked at that found that the press was largely silent out of a desire not to panic people. They're pretty sure that contributed to a much more severe crisis and outbreak than would have happened otherwise.
