Learning to Read in Alphabetic Writing Systems

How the brain develops that interface between vision and spoken language will depend on the writing system. The consistency with which a visual symbol represents a particular aspect of spoken language varies across writing systems. In English, children learn to access the meanings of printed words by translating them back to sounds - in effect decoding the visual symbols of our alphabet.
