St. Thomas, Is It Necessary for Us to Pray?
Aquinas: The human soul is a rational soul. Because it's rational, it has the capacity to universalize. Universals require a certain independence of matter. What is free? What is not tied to sense particulars but which is simply a product of the mind and its act of understanding. This is not composed of material elements. Therefore, it can't decompose. You can only decompose something that is composable. To destroy this unity of soul and body basically is to destroy man himself.
