The Rape of Nanking
The Japanese Imperial army had captured the Chinese nationalist capital of Nanking and was quickly liquidating some 90,000 POWs they had captured during the fall. Many of these groups of POWs had been split up and executed in small groups, so as not to alert other POWs because they were vastly outnumbered by POWs. The killing took over an hour, with soldiers having to stalk through piles of literally tens of thousands of corpses to finish off the survivors.
