The novel actually is about the economic woes of the 18 nineties. So there's something about scarlet o'hara's struggling that does resonate with the 19 thirties. The big lesson comes at the end, when dorothy discovers what. After all that travel and trying to get help in solving all her troubles, she finally comes to the conclusion.
