Professor vermay's theory for the evolution of shells is all about defence. As preditors such as fishes and crabs evolved these fierce jaws and claws, mollusks evolved increasingly elaborate shells. They essentially take proteins and chemicals from the sea water around them and use that material to build their shells. So many things that they do, burrowing oysters, cementing themselves, a lot of things they do all come back to protecting themselves in the sere.
