The Preservation Problems at Starcar

The peat at Starcar is a dark black material, it's quite sort of fibrous sea. It creates a fully saturated environment where there's no oxygen then the material and microbial processes that act on wood are retarded. The preservation problems at Starcar are also happening at other stone age sites across Europe. At York University inside one of the chemistry labs a powdered sample of deer bone from the site is being x-rayed to see exactly what condition it's in. Larger samples of bone and wood are prepared in the analytical laboratory which is where I am now with Dr Kirsty Penkman.
