What Caused the Great Divergence?

From the 15 hundreds until the late 19 seventies, there was an astonishing divergence in global living standards. Westerners dominated the realm of science as well as that of popular culture. How are we to explain this? It can't have been imperialism either. The other civilizations did plenty of that. Well, i believe the best answers to the question should focus on the roll of institutions.
