What Is a Market Maker?
A market maker is someone who provides liquidity. You enter an order to say buy a thousand shares of ABC stock at E-Trade. They'd be a firm that would pay E-Trade to get that order. So they would take the other side of your trade and sell it to you at a dollar if they have it.
