Women's Health in the 20th Century
Up until at least the 19 nineties, it wasn't that science knew nothing about women's bodies. It was just that they knew a lot less than they did about men's and let's look at why this is. The medical licensing laws enacted in the 18 hundreds in effect excluded women and people of color from practising medicine. Those that remained were white, wealthy men. And so a white mail as the base line for comparison became entrenched in medical training and medical knowledge well into the twentieth century.
