The German Empire - A History of the German Empire
Otto von Bismarck established the political primacy of Prussia. He declared war on the Catholic Church, a major domestic hindrance to national consolidation. The use of languages other than German was prohibited in schools as early as 1872. Like his Austrian and French counterparts, Kaiser Wilhelm II also played his part. If the French Republic honoured its heroes in Paris' Pontéon, the German Reich did so in Berlin's avenue of victory.
