Jim Thayer: A friend or relative will come up to us and exclaim, I have a great idea for a novel. This has happened to me several times and it's almost more than I can take. It reveals that our friend has utterly no notion of what makes up a novel. He doesn't know a sintilla about the craft of writing. Hasn't a clue. There's a huge difference between an idea and a plot.
