The Taliban have proven that on either side of the global jihadists divide, their approach can achieve tangible material successes, he adds. But it has also revealed we aren't really committed to championing democracy and freedom, writes Defterio. And this demonstrated willingness to just walk away will have repercussions "well beyond Afghanistan and well beyond 2021"
