I think what i say to my tudents sometimes when i'm teaching writing is, you know, the purpose of writing is not to get a date or to gather admirers. You write because it matters to you. My natural inclination, both as a person and as a writer, is to call it a banana, not an elongated, yellow fruit with a skin. And i just don't feel like that helps anybody.
