Michael O'Hannell: I always thought, well, of course, we, the good guys had to win World War II because, you know, we were fighting evil and how could evil have prevailed. The ability of war to take turns and twists and for outcomes not to be foreseeable really struck me as something I hadn't thought enough about. He says if Hitler had managed either to subdue Britain after defeating France in 1940 or defeat the Soviet Union it's not so clear what happens next in World War II. "We learn history looking backward, but history is made moving forward," he writes.
