Most people's understanding was if you're running official ledger firmware, that seed where all your funds are stored never leaves the device. The second main complaint really revolves around the transparency of the whole process. So since it was always possible that they were either doing something malicious or there was some flaw that maybe people didn't know about because it was closed source.
