Rivalries can increase motivation, but we also tend to choke and sport at a higher level when we're facing a rival. Fright is, yes, sometimes it can lit up your game, but sometimes it can create this pressure expectation that puts you in a place where your game just falls apart. So i think we have to be very careful on where we're looking at rivals. And the other thing that i know the research shows as well is that often the better thing to look at your competitors as, again, not evil, and not as like, ay, they're my best friends, what have you.
