In a previous life, I worked in a what's called a quantum optics lab. One of the big things when you're running a transformer on your standard kind of like semiconductor hardware is it's very expensive. And so using this technique, they basically show that, hey, you know, we think we can make optical circuits that run transformer algorithms for cheaper and potentially significantly cheaper. They experimented with simulations and they showed that if you scale it to blazes, you could get like around 10,000 times more energy efficiency out of these systems than current state of the art digital electronic processor.
