The Fundamentals of Soldering
Machiavelli gives the example of the Romans and their three tiered system of possible retreat. The infantry was drilled with such discipline that they would constantly be able to bring kind of a new ferocity to the front whenever one line needed to pull back. So if you've got two equally, yeah, if you have two combatants who are technologically equal or close, it will come down to discipline and training.
