The Day of the Lord
The day of the lord is, of course, a curring image within the book of the 12. One can imagine that jonah would have taken the miraculous flourishing of the plant and its granting of shade to him as a sign of the lord's favour towards him. And if he just waited long enough, and the shade of the gourd would help him in this, he would see the destruction of the city. Jonah has been thinking in terms of justice, as rabbi forman observes. However, the plan does not have any right to its existence.
